 Honoring Heritage, Protecting Rights: National Indigenous Peoples Month 2024 and 27 Years of IPRA

        The National Indigenous Peoples Month 2024 and the 27th year of the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act (IPRA) remind us of the critical role of Indigenous Peoples in shaping our nation’s identity. With the theme “Mga Katutubo at Katutubong Dunong: Pahalagahan, Pangalagaan at Parangalan,” the celebration focuses on valuing their rich cultures and protecting their rights. It is a time to reflect on the struggles of Indigenous people and to honor their wisdom and deep connection to the country

        The Indigenous Peoples Rights Act (IPRA) or Republic Act No. 8371, passed in 1997, is a vital law that protects the rights of Indigenous Peoples in the Philippines. It recognizes their ownership of ancestral lands and their right to govern these according to their traditions and customs. Through the issuance of Certificates of Ancestral Domain Titles (CADTs), it ensures that Indigenous communities can secure their land and resources for future generations. The law also upholds their right to self-determination, allowing them to preserve their culture, pursue their own development, and protect their heritage from exploitation. IPRA stands as a recognition of the invaluable contributions of Indigenous Peoples to our country’s identity and environment, emphasizing the need to respect and support their way of life.


        This month-long observance brings attention to the importance of the IPRA, a law that protects the rights of Indigenous Peoples . It is an opportunity to call on the government and society to do more in addressing ongoing challenges. By revisiting this law, we strengthen efforts to protect their heritage and ensure they have access to essential services like education and healthcare.

        Through cultural events, storytelling, and discussions, the celebration also creates spaces for sharing and understanding Indigenous knowledge and traditions. It bridges the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, raising respect and solidarity, its more than just a celebration, this month is a call to action for all Filipinos to stand with Indigenous Peoples, celebrate their contributions, and work towards a future where their rights and cultures are fully recognized and protected.
